3.31 WATER AND DAMPPROOFING

Damp proofing and water proofing requirements and codes vary by region, be sure to check your local codes. Keep in mind that although the two terms sound alike and are often referred to as the same thing, they are not. It is recommended that basement walls be waterproofed.

A common method of damp proofing is to use a water based latex material which can be applied by brush, roller or sprayed. Greenblock recommends a double application at all EPS joints, course lines and seams.

Some local codes may require installation of a water proof membrane for construction of the basement wall. A spray on product suitable for seamless application directly on the block provides a stretchable rubber/polymeric membrane over the entire wall and is effective and highly recommended. Additionally, there are a number of quality “peel and stick” membrane systems. A drainage line at the base of the footing is normally required.

For extremely wet basement wall conditions, especially those penetrating the water table, the use of a water stop at the edge of the wall and footing is recommended.

Greenblock recommends below grade walls be water proofed with a seamless application and be protected with a backfill protector.
