October 2008 Issue #2
Welcome to GreenTalk, Greenblock’s newsletter which will discuss the latest happenings at Greenblock and bring you interesting and timely news and information from the ICF Industry.
Message from the President:

Greetings, we hope everyone is weathering the current economic and election year storm. Not much I can contribute to the situation other than encouragement to dig in and let’s get each other through it.

At Greenblock, we have been fortunate that the building activity which is occurring seems to be proportionately built with ICF construction. Our growth initiatives have delivered +30 percent sales improvements for the quarter ending 9/30/08 versus last year. Thanks for your continued support of our products and services.

Last month in Portland, OR the ICFA (www.forms.org) annual trade show and convention was held. Through much networking and discussion with industry partners and associates there is overwhelming confidence that our industry will continue gaining momentum through the coming years. And while builders and contractors are still determining how to build high performing structures, there is a significant increase in knowledge, recognition and acceptance of ICFs as a mainstream building method. For those who are members and attended the meeting, thank you for being part of our industry. For those who are not yet involved, please consider joining and contributing. Next year’s meeting will be in Orlando, FL September 28-30… we hope to see you there.

Over the past year we have increased the number of Greenblock Territory Sales Managers, added production facilities and increased our customer service staff. Providing our customers with exceptional sales and technical support as well as high quality products and installation services is paramount. Please do let us know how we are performing for you… your feedback is important to us.

Sincerely,
Jeff Alexander
President

PROJECT PROFILE

Rafiki Village Corporate Campus

Rafiki Village Corporate Campus
Location: Eustiss FL
Size: 13 buildings 25K sf of ICF wall
Product: Greenblock 2-4-2 (4" core) system
Builder: Mark Construction, Longwood FL

Features: The 57-acre Rafiki campus will feature 13 buildings constructed with more than 25,000 square feet of Greenblock ICFs. Sustainable, energy-efficient and structurally superior buildings were mandated by the design architects for this project, which lead them to the selection of Greenblock ICFs for the exterior wall systems. The sustainable and energy-efficient ICF designs for these structures will lessen the impact on energy use within this community and become a long-lasting benefit for the Rafiki Foundation as the maintenance and operating costs will be significantly less than concrete block or wood-frame construction.

GO GREEN!
- News and Information from the Green Building Industry -

A message from USGBC CEO Rick Fedrizzi

Dear USGBC Constituents:

In recent weeks, a wave of fear and pessimism propagated by the world financial crisis has stolen the headlines, gripped the nation, and challenged our movement. In conversation after conversation, people are asking what will happen to the green building movement if our community is plunged into a recession.

And I have an answer for them. The greed that led the world economy into crisis will not defeat our commitment to good work. Fear will not dominate our agenda. And our commitment to change - even in the face of so great a challenge - will not waver.

Change doesn't wait on Washington. And it doesn't depend on Wall Street. Change comes from within. The green building movement has been demonstrating that fact for more than 15 years. Before there was a single government green building policy, before the business community stood up and took notice, before there was a LEED - there was you. Thousands upon thousands of committed individuals dedicated to doing better by doing good. You've built this movement. You're building sustainable communities. And every single one of us has a contribution to make towards pulling our country out of this crisis.

We cannot lose sight of our mission. It is within reach.

How? It's time for the green building movement to deploy the expertise and capacity we've built in new construction to green what we've already got. Ninety-nine percent of achieving our mission is wrapped up in our existing homes and buildings. It will save money. It will save energy. It will help save our climate. And directly relevant to today's economic environment, it will create good, green, local jobs. As just one example, USGBC estimates that a 100% commitment to greening existing commercial buildings alone would create more than 1.5 million new opportunities for employment for out of work Americans.

In four weeks, we will meet together at Greenbuild. And when you get to Boston, we will celebrate everything that your individual commitments have accomplished so far. We'll enjoy the fellowship of more than 20,000 friends and colleagues who share our vision for a sustainable future. And we will keep moving forward, together. I'll see you there.

With gratitude,

S. Rick Fedrizzi
